Chiefs star Tyrann Mathieu may have ruined his post-Pro Bowl free agency destination

The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot to figure out when kicking off free agency. Patrick Mahomes and company reunited just before a third consecutive Super Bowl trip after Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals stunned them at Arrowhead Stadium.

One of the biggest question marks for the Chiefs is talented safety Tyrann Mathieu, who should come to market as one of the best safeties available. His market should be robust, and Mathieu presumably being in line for a huge salary is terrible news for the Chiefs along with the other issues they need to address on their roster.

Mathieu traveled to Las Vegas to play in the Pro Bowl after the Chiefs’ shock loss to the Bengals. While representing the AFC, he might have given away his desired free agency destination. If his cues are any indication, the Chiefs are in deep trouble.

Tyrann Mathieu pissed off the Chargers fan base by directing a Tweet at Derwin James after the Pro Bowl

The Chiefs star made sure to get the Los Angeles Chargers fan base excited during the Pro Bowl by tweeting at fellow safety Derwin James.

Mathieu’s message reading, “these boys are up to something”, surely means nothing. Or, who knows, maybe it could.

But, in AFC practices leading up to the Pro Bowl game, Mathieu did the same after catching a pass from Chargers QB Justin Herbert.

Again, it couldn’t be anything other than Mathieu having fun. But the Chiefs’ safety is heading for free agency and should command a ton of money, and the Chargers not only have the money to sign him, but pairing James and Mathieu would make arguably the NFL’s best safety duo.

Chargers could easily pair James and Mathieu

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley emphasized the importance of defense from day one, and after leading the Los Angeles Rams to the top of defense in his final year with the organization, it doesn’t. shouldn’t be a surprise.

The Chargers’ defense has had many glaring problems in the 2021 season, and the money they have to spend should be mostly used to fix the defense.

Mathieu and James are two of the best safeties in the league, and pairing James with a talent like the Honey Badger would immediately send the Chargers defense to the top of the league. Plus, Mahomes and the Chiefs would dread those matchups with LA even more than they already do.

Following Mathieu’s Twitter activity is interesting, and he acknowledged the call-up from the Chargers in December 2021.

The Chargers certainly have some good things going, and signing Mathieu would be a boon for Staley and general manager Tom Telesco.

The price for Mathieu is going to be high. After his electrifying career at LSU, Mathieu entered the league with the Arizona Cardinals and spent one season with the Houston Texans before joining the Chiefs.

He’s been wonderful with Kansas City, earning two first-team All-Pro nods and three straight trips to the Pro Bowl.

The bigger question is money, and Mathieu’s projections should be higher than the contract Harrison Smith recently secured with the Minnesota Vikings safety.

It’s a ton of money for Mathieu, but it’s worth every penny. The Chargers should address the defense and try to make a run while Justin Herbert is on his rookie contract.

However, they still have to ink James on a long-term overtime and make a big decision with wide receiver Mike Williams.

All in all, the Chargers make sense for both sides, and Mathieu could get whatever money he wants and send LA to the top of the tough AFC West.

Of course, Mathieu’s Twitter activity means nothing, but the thought of him on the Chargers is more than intriguing.

Either way, Mathieu is about to back the Brinks truck into his driveway when free agency begins.
