It comes as motorists see fuel costs soar – it now costs around £100 to fill up the average family car.

Soaring petrol prices saw prices hit 178.9 pa liter, according to the RAC, and 189.3 pa liter for diesel.

Fuel prices have fallen slightly in recent days, but are still considerably higher than a year ago.

Supermarkets were criticized last week for not passing wholesale price cuts on to customers quickly enough.

Independent Forecourts have slashed prices further, with one petrol station claiming to be the cheapest in the UK.

And drivers also spotted fuel for less than 160p a liter at Costco.

Checking petrol prices is the easiest way to keep your fuel costs down – sites like petrolprices.com let you search by zip code to find the cheapest in your area.

According to Luke Bosdet, an AA expert, checking local social media groups is also a way to research cheap fuel prices.

Loyalty schemes could save you money – some could cut up to 5p a liter on the cost.

Braking and accelerating suddenly will consume more fuel, as will accelerating and blasting the air conditioning.

Check that your tires are at the correct pressure and don’t get sucked into buying premium fuel on the forecourt – most cars don’t need it.
