MADRID (AP) — It didn’t take long for Real Madrid to find winning matches.

Three days after seeing their perfect start to the season end in a draw in the Spanish league, Madrid beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in the Champions League to take full control of Group F.

Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior scored a goal each in the first half as the defending champions secured a third straight win in European competition. The result at the Santiago Bernabéu gave Madrid a five-point lead over Shakhtar, who started the match with 11 Ukrainian players.

In the other group game, Leipzig beat winless Celtic 3-1 at home to stay in third place, one point behind Shakhtar.

It was Madrid’s seventh consecutive win in the Champions League group stage. He outscored his opponents 19-2 in that run.

Madrid’s 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna on Sunday was their first loss of the season after nine straight wins in all competitions.

The hosts dominated from the start on Wednesday and finished with a total of 35 attempts, 13 of which were on target.

“The ball didn’t want to go in. It was a game to win 7-1, but sometimes that’s how it is,” said Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos. “It’s hard to believe it was only 2-1, but in the end we got the three points we wanted.”

Rodrygo opened the scoring with a low shot from just outside the box in the 13th minute. The Brazilian then netted Vinícius’ goal in the 28th minute with a fine pass through the middle of the box.

Madrid continued to miss chance after chance until Shakhtar nearly netted one their first significant chance of the game in the 39th – a volley near the penalty spot by Oleksandr Zubkov.

The visitors threatened after the goal and nearly equalized in a one-on-one situation spoiled by Mykhailo Mudryk early in the second half.

“What we admit is that Madrid deserved to win, they might have scored more but we played bravely and took risks and in the end not only lost by one goal but we can -be caught 2-2”, said Shakhtar coach Igor Jovićević.

“I suspect that many of the men fighting for Ukraine’s freedom are Shakhtar fans,” he added. “The least we can do for them is make them proud, show our form of strong competition and I think there will be a lot of proud Shakhtar fans tonight given the way we played and the how we stayed in this game.”

Madrid regained control in the second half but continued to squander their chances as Shakhtar looked dangerous in the counterattacks.

“We lowered the intensity a bit, we felt comfortable and I had to remind them at half-time that the game was not over,” said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “We played a lot of good football, but it was one of those dangerous games where if you don’t score the goals you deserve you can be caught off guard.”

Karim Benzema, who returned to action at the weekend after an injury, missed a series of chances throughout the match.

The Shakhtar players circled the pitch to thank the fans for their support after the game.

It’s the third season in a row that Madrid and Shakhtar have met in the Champions League group stage, with the Ukrainian side upsetting the Spanish powerhouse both home and away in 2020-21.

Madrid were without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois through injury. Luka Modric, who suffered from mild muscle fatigue, started on the bench, as did Eden Hazard.

Madrid had started with a 3-0 victory at Celtic and a 2-0 victory against Leipzig. Shakhtar won 4-1 in Leipzig and drew 1-1 with Celtic at home.

There was a minute’s silence before the match in honor of the victims of the stadium tragedy in Indonesia.
